Helios Hotel has opened on Glenferrie Road in Malvern, bringing a three level Greek hospitality concept from chef Ioannis Kasidokostas and Maria Tsilfoglou, the team behind Aegli in South Melbourne.
The project is their biggest to date. Named after the Greek Titan of the sun, Helios moves beyond the idea of a single dining room and instead spreads the experience across multiple spaces.
At ground level, Atlas forms the restaurant at the heart of the venue, built around Greek inspired cooking and the wood fire. Above it, Elysian provides mezzanine level private dining, while rooftop bar Asteria is planned to open in November.
Food is only part of the picture. Greek wine, ouzo, music and the energy of contemporary Athens are woven through the venue, with DJ programming designed to move Helios from dining room into something more energetic as the night develops.
For Kasidokostas and Tsilfoglou, the scale is new, but the underlying idea follows the same thread as Aegli: Greek hospitality treated as something living rather than nostalgic.
