Drop Shop: Brunswick East’s Bottle Shop With Better Things to Drink

Drop Shop storefront photographed at night on a Melbourne street corner

Drop Shop sits at 70 Lygon Street in Brunswick East with a fairly simple idea: make buying good wine feel less complicated.

The shelves move across Australian and international producers, with plenty of smaller labels, interesting bottles and the kind of wines that reward a conversation before they make it into the fridge.

But Drop Shop works because it behaves like more than a bottle shop. Its regular Drop In tastings bring winemakers and producers into the store, turning the weekly bottle run into something closer to a neighbourhood wine session. Recent tastings have moved through producers including Bandicoot Run, Dexter Wines, Mulline and Elderslie.

That sense of accessibility runs through the place. There is serious wine here, but very little ceremony around it. Ask questions, try something unfamiliar, leave with a bottle you probably did not arrive planning to buy.

In a suburb already very good at drinking, Drop Shop has found its place by making the bottle shop part of the night rather than simply the stop before it.
