Cobb Lane Bakery: Coming Back West at Younghusband

Two people walking into the Younghusband precinct where Cobb Lane Bakery is located

Cobb Lane is heading back west, opening its fifth location inside the Younghusband precinct in Kensington in late November.

For owners Matt Forbes and Amy Newman, the move has a neat sense of return. Forbes lived in Kensington when he first arrived in Melbourne around two decades ago, before the original Cobb Lane opened in Yarraville in 2013.

The new bakery will sit inside Younghusband, the 122 year old former wool store on Elizabeth Street that is being transformed into a broader mixed use precinct. Original red brickwork, steel columns and heritage details remain, with seating extending into the bluestone laneway outside.

Cobb Lane will bring the things it has built its reputation on: viennoiserie, sourdough, pastries and sandwiches, alongside coffee and a selection of take home provisions.

The setting makes the opening particularly interesting. Rather than another isolated bakery shopfront, Cobb Lane becomes part of Younghusband’s attempt to build a neighbourhood destination from one of Kensington’s significant industrial buildings.

It is a return west for Cobb Lane, but on a very different scale.
